VIC:Speed, drinking linked to male road deaths

A Victorian survey has found men are more likely than women to speed if they think
they can get away with it - and to rate the risk of accident from drink driving as low.

Transport Accident Commission boss JANET DORE says the research shows a serious change
of male attitudes in particular is needed to reduce the state's road toll.

More than 140 males have been killed on Victoria's roads this year, almost three times
the number of females.

Fed: Sorghum crop tipped to soar 80pc to record high, rice down 90pc

Australia's sorghum crop is tipped to soar by 80 per cent to a record 2.5 million tonnes
in 2007-08.

But rice crops will be down a massive 90 per cent .. and cotton by 58 per cnet according
to the nation's chief commodities forecaster.

The sorghum boom follows average to above-average rain since October last year in parts
of Queensland and northern NSW.

PHILLIP GLYDE from Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics says recent
floods around Emerald damaged some of the sorghum crop.

But he says the increased yield in the southern regions will more than offset the losses.

ABARE's February report says the total summer crop should climb by almost 40 per cent
to 3.2 million tonnes .. well short of the record 5.3 million tonnes in 2000-01.

Fed: Don't be alarmed about pork: minister

By Simon Jenkins

CANBERRA, April 28 AAP - Australians shouldn't be alarmist about pork amid the swine
flu outbreak, federal Agriculture Minister Tony Burke has said.

Mr Burke was asked on Tuesday if Australia would follow the lead of other countries
and stop importing pork as part of its response to swine flu.

"I don't think any of us should be alarmist about pig meat itself," he replied.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has been quick to point out that people cannot
catch swine flu from eating pork.

"Swine influenza has not been shown to be transmissible to people through eating properly
handled and prepared pork, or other products derived from pigs," WHO has said.

"The swine influenza virus is killed by cooking temperatures of 160F/70C, corresponding
to the general guidance for the preparation of pork and other meat."

But that advice has not stopped some countries from moving to halt pork imports.

Mr Burke, who spoke with the director of the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service
on Tuesday, said the government was doing everything it could to minimise any potential
spread of the disease to Australia.

"Everything that we're doing is completely in line with what the World Health Organisation
is recommending," he told reporters in Canberra.

Qld: Boy paralysed by viral infection will be home for Xmas

By Petrina Berry

BRISBANE, Dec 23 AAP - A five-year-old Brisbane boy who was virtually paralysed after
contracting a viral infection is regaining movement in time to go home for Christmas.

Ethan Nicol had a cough initially mistaken for the common flu three weeks ago, but
it became apparent to his mother Sharon Power that something was seriously wrong when
her son was too weak to go to the toilet.

"He had a cough and that afternoon, his neck started to get sore," Ms Power said.

"He hadn't been to the toilet at all and he had a temperature and every time I picked
him up, he just felt weaker and weaker."

He was admitted to hospital the following morning.

"He was pretty much paralysed," Ms Power said.

"He had lost his speech, all movement and he couldn't even swallow."

Within 24 hours, he was diagnosed with Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM)
after MRI scans.

ADEM damages the protective covering of nerve fibres, preventing electrical impulses
from travelling to the brain.

It affects fewer than one in 100,000 people a year - most of them children aged between
five and eight years old.

Paediatric trainee registrar Sonia Shah said Ethan's illness was only one of three
ADEM cases she had seen in the past eight years.

She said Ethan was able to move his arms and was slowly regaining full movement in his legs.

"We were worried about his ability to swallow and whether he would choke on just his
saliva," Dr Shah said.

"But now we are hoping he will be able to not only go home for Christmas Day but we
hope he will be able to stay there and come back as an outpatient for ongoing treatment."

She was optimistic Ethan would make a full recovery, and said between 60 to 90 per
cent of ADEM patients made a full recovery within six to eight weeks.

Qld: Investigation under way into helicopter crash landing

BRISBANE, April 9 AAP - A pilot had to be cut free from the wreckage of his helicopter
after it crashed near Townsville while putting up a new powerline.

The pilot and his co-pilot were taken to Townsville Hospital for treatment after sustaining
neck and back injuries in today's crash in a vacant lot at Stuart, just south of Townsville,
around 10am (AEST).

The McDonnell Douglas 500 two-seater helicopter had been subcontracted to Downer EDI
Engineering to string a new powerline.

Both men on board, believed to be aged in their 40s, were conscious and breathing when
emergency services arrived.

An Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) spokesman said the co-pilot escaped the wreckage,
but then collapsed, and the pilot was trapped.

"The pilot was trapped for a short time and fire brigades had to use the jaws of life
to cut him out," the spokesman said.

"They cut away the joystick and control column to free him because he was actually
pinned in his seat."

A spokesman for Downer EDI said the men were employees of a helicopter charter company
subcontracted to Downer to string a powerline between the Townsville South and Townsville
East substations.

"Downer EDI Engineering, as principal contractor on the project, is working closely
with the appropriate authorities to respond to the incident," the spokesman said.

Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) investigators were travelling to the scene today.

Fed: Pharmacists hope fat pill ad ban will be reversed

By Tamara McLean, National Medical Writer

SYDNEY, April 23 AAP - Banning ads for the controversial weight-loss pill Xenical will
drive more obese Australians to drastic surgery and dubious fat-stripping potions, pharmacists
say.

The Pharmacy Guild hopes to overturn a decision that bars drug company Roche from marketing
its anti-obesity pill direct to the public.

A federal health committee voted in February to ban the ads, which controversially
screened during the television program Australian Idol, on the grounds that pharmacists
were being pressured to dispense the product.

A campaign by consumer watchdog Choice also has claimed that teenagers as young as
16 were requesting Xenical, which has been available over the counter since last year.

The ban will not be signed off until June and in the meantime the guild is urging its
members to fight it.

"Pharmacists stand up to consumers every day, that's part of our job. So to imply we're
weak and can be bullied into dispensing this drug is insulting," said the guild's national
president Kos Sclavos.

The guild did not usually support direct-to-consumer advertising of pharmaceuticals,
but Mr Sclavos said Xenical had proven itself as an exception, with strong results and
few side-effects.

"We live in a society where obesity is a huge problem and, unfortunately, most people
think the first option is lap band surgery and miracle tea leaf cures," he said.

"Taking Xenical out of the public eye will only make this worse."

Choice, which led the initial attack on Xenical advertisements, claimed the ads had
inspired more teenagers to request the product.

But the guild says this is incorrect and most young people could not afford the $120-a-month
price anyway.

Roche is expected to make a submission against the decision, along with the Australian
Self-Medication Industry which is "hopeful" it will be reversed.

Choice also will make a further submission to say the unprecedented marketing endangers
vulnerable consumers.

The National Drugs and Poisons Schedule Committee, which is tasked with making the
decision, has a history of changing its mind.

The Arab spring: Democratic Dawn, Economic Twilight.

Summary: No matter the concessions to regional unrest, controlled state economies won't offer a solution in a networked global economy

ade facto 'davos consensus' was the dominant policy paradigm in the pro-West, ostensibly pro- market constellation of Arab states in the past decade. Its salient features were high economic growth, a reliance on offshore credit and FDI, rampant property speculation, the control of privatised assets by a coterie of pro-regime oligarchs, and a tolerance for huge income inequalities. Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia were hailed as the new Arab world's economic tigers in the past decade. Hosni Mubarak's regime even used its ex IMF/World Bank technocrats and pro-reform agenda to boost its legitimacy in the diplomatic chancelleries of its Western backers. President Ben Ali's cronies were often joint venture partners of the French corporate elite in Tunisia. Even Colonel Gaddafi's Libya set up sovereign wealth funds, offered oil concessions to BP, Shell and Total, licensed private banks and took stakes in ENI and Unibanco, the crown jewels of Italian business.

Autocratic regimes desperate for political survival resort to economic populism, not free market reforms and budget discipline. This is the message of Egypt's Supreme Military Council's crackdown on the prominent 'crony capitalists' of the Mubarak era or the $80 billion fiscal stimulus announced by the princes of the House of Saud. After all, $125 Brent crude oil is a windfall for the oil exporting GCC, Iraq and Algeria, but a public finance black hole for Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Syria, Lebanon, Tunisia and Yemen. Food inflation, endemic youth unemployment and crony capitalism were the lethal cocktail that led to the overthrew of Mubarak and Ben Ali. These macro risks will only be exacerbated by the oil shock. Economic shocks will define the choices made by Arab rulers. Anwar Sadat's regime was almost swept from power by street protests due to 'IMF bread riots' in the 1970's. It is no coincidence that bread has been heavily subsidised since Pharonic times, a policy choice continued by the later Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Mamluk, Ottoman, British and modern military rulers of Egypt. Inflation rates in the Arab world are set to soar once governments engage in deficit spending, subsidise food (Egypt is the world's largest importer of wheat) and create make believe jobs in bloated bureaucracies for a younger generation empowered by Facebook, Twitter and Al Jazeera satellite television. The conclusion is as depressing as it is obvious. Populism will generate, not end, economic malaise, social unrest, inflation, deficit and joblessness. The Davos consensus will only survive in the fabulously wealthy petrocurrency enclaves of the Gulf, such as UAE and Qatar, where ruling elites can afford the luxury of pro-market capitalism.

The Arab world faces its greatest geopolitical convulsion since the death rattle of the Ottoman empire a century ago. Its impact on Arab economies, banking systems, cross-border trade and FDI will be equally seismic. State capitalism and planned economies are simply no longer formulas for success in the Internet Age, with its networked global economy and unfettered capital markets. Real FDI must create jobs and industrial values, not just add froth to property bubbles or lubricate financial Ponzi schemes.

Sadly, the Arab spring will not midwife an economic renaissance. Privatisation is simply too risky for governments, terrified about street protests and mass youth unemployment. Assad's Syria, Saleh's Yemen and Gaddafi's Libya have shed their pro-market flirtation veneer and reverted to their controlled state DNA. Bahrain's role as the Arab world's financial centre is at risk. The Arab spring promises a democratic dawn but its volatile geopolitical spasms will dampen appetites for its financial souks.

"State capitaliSm and planned economieS are Simply no longer formulaS for SucceSS in the internet age."

Sharp Introduces AQUOS PHONE Worldwide.

New Brand of Smartphone Offers Greater Enjoyment by Linking with AQUOS LCD TVs

Osaka, May 20, 2011 - (JCN Newswire) - In May 2011, Sharp Corporation introduced into the Japanese market the AQUOS PHONE, a smartphone that gives users more enjoyment thanks to a high-quality graphics engine and the ability to link with AQUOS LCD TVs. In addition, Sharp is using its proprietary technology to differentiate itself in the smartphone market and create a 'global smartphone' that will also be available in China.

The AQUOS PHONE with high-quality graphics engine is a new brand of Sharp smartphone that offers new forms of enjoyment through connectivity to AV equipment and wireless networks. By connecting the AQUOS PHONE to an AQUOS LCD TV via HDMI, users can enjoy videos and games stored on their phone, as well as Internet HD videos and other content, on the large screen of an AQUOS LCD TV. And with the expected proliferation of equipment certified for the DLNA(R)(Digital Living Network Alliance) home network standard, users will be able to, for example, watch content from AQUOS TVs or Blu-ray Disc recorders wirelessly on their AQUOS PHONE.

Another feature of the AQUOS PHONE is a high-quality graphics engine incorporating the image-reproducing know-how Sharp has built up through its AQUOS LCD TVs. This engine utilizes image sharpening technology, which gives extremely naturally renderings of the borders and contours of images, and color adjustment technology, which adjusts color intensity and brightness, to give users high-quality images of mobile device broadcasts, Internet videos, and content from AV equipment over DLNA networks.

* DLNA(R), the DLNA logo, and DLNA Certified(TM) are trademarks or registered trademarks of the Digital Living Network Alliance. DLNA is a standard for connecting AV equipment and information appliances that are interoperable with each other over LANs and home networks.

Is healthcare bipartisanship down the drain?(USA)

Byline: Brad Knickerbocker

President Obama is still holding out for bipartisanship on healthcare reform. At least that's the rhetoric coming from the White House two days after a historic seven-hour meeting with lawmakers across the street at Blair House.

"I am eager and willing to move forward with members of both parties on healthcare if the other side is serious about coming together to resolve our differences and get this done," Obama said in his weekly radio/Internet address Saturday morning.

But more and more, it's looking like Democrats will have to go it alone on what has become the most contentious issue in Obama's first year in the White House - at least if anything comprehensive is to result from the debate.

Obama hints at this when he adds, "...we cannot lose the opportunity to meet this challenge." And he lists the major differences between the two sides, including insurance company accountability, tax credits for businesses and individuals, and how to handle preexisting medical conditions.

GOP won't cooperate with Obama

Sen. Tom Coburn, (R) of Oklahoma, who's a physician, gave the Republican response Saturday, and there seemed not to be any hint at bipartisan accommodation in his rhetoric.

"I'm concerned that the majority in Congress still is not listening to the American people on the subject of healthcare reform," he said. "By an overwhelming margin, the American people are telling us to scrap the current bills, which will lead to a government takeover of healthcare, and we should start over.

"Unfortunately, even before the summit took place the majority in Congress signaled its intent to reject our offers to work together," Coburn continued. "Instead they want to use procedural tricks and backroom deals to ram through a new bill that combines the worst aspects of the bills the Senate and House passed last year." (Monitor White House correspondent Linda Feldmann's take on the healthcare summit here.)

As the two sides maneuver for position, an attempt at "reconciliation" seems inevitable.

Sounds fair and good. But as Monitor congressional reporter Gail Russell Chaddock points out: "In the dictionary, 'reconciliation' means bringing together, conciliation, or fence mending. But on the floor of the US Senate, it's pure procedural warfare."

A way around the filibuster

In practice, it means that instead of the 60 Senate votes usually expected in order to pass major legislation, it would take just 51 - effectively bypassing the 41 Republican senators who would no longer be able to filibuster the legislative process to a halt.

Although it's been used in the past (including when the GOP controlled Congress), Sen. John McCain (R) of Arizona says the use of reconciliation to pass healthcare reform would be "cataclysmic."

In any case, it wouldn't be easy to pull off. Some Democrats resist the idea - especially since a clear majority of Americans oppose reconciliation, according to a recent Gallup poll.

It's unclear how supportive Obama would be of using the controversial reconciliation process to get a bill passed. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Friday the president "will likely make an announcement next week about the next steps forward."

Tequila: setting new standards: as the tequila category grows, ultra-premium expressions make a mark.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

The first sniff, sip and swallow will quickly reveal why 100% blue agave tequilas are so tremendously popular. Ounce for ounce, these ultra-premium tequilas are comparable in quality and allure to vintage malts and well-aged cognac. Their extraordinary characters are so remarkably rich and vibrant that you're left with the unmistakable conclusion that this is how tequila is meant to taste.

These are the best of times for the category. The Margarita is the most popular cocktail in America, and a wide range of classes of tequila is used to create a dizzying number of distinctive Margaritas. At the same time, interest in handcrafted tequilas has been nothing short of phenomenal and has helped propel the category to robust growth of 10% in 2007, the steepest increase of the light liquors, out-pacing the growth of vodka (6.7%) and rum (5.1%)--according to the Beverage Information Group. Considering that tequila constitutes only about 6% of the American spirits market, there is tremendous opportunity for continued growth.

"I'm confident that in the foreseeable future tequila will challenge vodka as America's spirit of choice," contended Gary Shansby, founder and chairman of Partida Tequila. "Tequila has everything consumers are looking for in a spirit--body, texture, enticing aromatics, layers upon layers of sensational flavors, and unlimited drink applications."

As their labels clearly state, 100% agave tequilas are single-ingredient products. They're distilled using nothing other than blue agave, a majestic green succulent related to the aloe. While there are nearly 360 varieties of the agave, tequila can only be made from the Weber blue agave. Imported into the U.S. by Bing Crosby and Phil Harris in the early 1960s, Herradura was the first brand of 100% agave tequila available in the U.S.

Crafting great tequila is a labor- and time-intensive process. Agaves mature at their own pace irrespective of demand. It takes the plant between eight to twelve years to reach maturity and optimally is harvested when the plant's natural sugar content has peaked at about 21 to 25 brix. The agave thrives in rich volcanic soil, and a warm and dry climate. As it is with wine, the appellation and growing region the agaves were cultivated in is a point of distinction between brands.

The differences between brands of 100% agave tequilas are years in the making, and taking shortcuts during the production process consigns a brand to mediocrity. From harvesting agaves to the un-barreling of an anejo, the production cycle can exceed 15 years.

Like champagne and cognac, tequila has its own appellation, Denominacion de Origen, which delineates growing regions and specifies ingredient content. Since 1993, the production of tequila has been strictly regulated by the CRT (Consejo Regulador del Tequila), whose symbol appears on every label of tequila. The agency rigorously enforces quality standards throughout all segments of the industry, including agave growers, distillers (tequileros), bottlers, and marketers.

The growing legions of tequila aficionados are likely as attracted to the romance of discovery, as they are to the irresistible appeal of the spirit. For many, the appreciation of fine tequila requires sampling new brands and styles. There's a joy to the discovery, a process without limitations, and if your retail shelves provide the visa and port of entry, you'll be the long-term beneficiary.

"Tequila enthusiasts revel in discovering new and exciting brands, proving themselves to be ahead of the curve by introducing them to their circle of friends," said Christopher Zarus, president of the International Tasting Group, importers of six small-batch, limited-production reposados. "Consumers are using the Internet to learn about rare and fascinating tequilas, which has further fueled interest in the category. The steadily increasing sales of ultra-premium brands confirm that we've developed a taste for the good stuff."

Senior Class Anejos

After more than six years of deliberation, the CRT has created the designation o Extra Anejo, which signifies that a 100% agave tequila has been aged for three years or more. For generations, these ultra-luxurious spirits were reserved for the private use of the maestro tequilero and family, but now any commoner with a few extra hundred dollars in their pocket can afford what many consider the epitome of the craft.

Well before this new designation was put into effect, a handful of these rare anejos have been thriving in the U.S. Among them is the acclaimed Herradura Seleccion Suprema, which was likely the first extended age tequila Americans had ever experienced ... and it was good.

Introduced in 1995 in honor of the company's 125th anniversary, Herradura's present to mankind is a masterpiece handcrafted from estate-grown agaves, and aged 49 months in select white oak barrels. Production of Seleccion Suprema is limited to less than 2,000 bottles a year, which partially accounts for the $250 price tag.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Scarcity and demand though doesn't begin to explain the tequila's intrinsic value. With its wafting floral bouquet and bakery-fresh flavors, Herradura's famed extra anejo is a celebration of style, and homage to the terroir of Amatitan. Appropriately enough, Seleccion Suprema is presented in an individually numbered decanter.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Also making its American debut in 1995 was vintage-dated Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia. As the name suggests, for two centuries this highly prized spirit remained the private domain of Jose Cuervo and his descendants. It was finally released to commemorate their 200th anniversary.

The arrival of limited edition Reserva de la Familia had the same impact on American drinking trends as the Seleccion Suprema. Few in this country had ever tasted a tequila of this magnitude and intensity. The Reserva is an engaging spirit with a lustrous amber color, generous bouquet, and a spicy, oaky palate that gradually subsides into a cognac-like finish.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

This noble anejo is crafted from a blend of the finest aged tequilas in their cellars, all of which have been matured for a minimum of three years in both new charred French and American oak barrels. Underscoring its artisan nature, Reserva de la Familia is bottled, labeled, numbered and sealed in wax by hand.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

These museum-grade tequilas redefined our concept of luxury living. By the time 1996 rolled around, aficianados in droves were trading in their shot glasses for brandy snifters.

Many of the perennial heavyweights in the category hail from the rugged highlands of Jalisco. El Tesoro de Don Felipe Paradiso is a five-year old extra anejo handcrafted from a blend of aged tequilas selected for their distinctive characteristics. The extra anejo is then further matured in French oak casks previously used by A. de Fussigny Cognac, the effect of which can be appreciated throughout its sultry character. If it's true that ingenuity is the mother of invention, then double-barreled Paradiso is a stroke of genius.

Equally exquisite is Don Julio 1942, a highly acclaimed ultra-premium made at La Primavera distillery under the supervision of legendary tequilero, Don Julio Gonzalez Estrada. Issued to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Don Julio's first distillery, the limited edition extra anejo spends a minimum of three years in oak, during which it develops a satiny, medium-weight body, and the enticing flavors of vanilla, fruit, spice and toasty oak. The lingering finish is sweet and sublime.

The world's bestselling brand of 100% agave tequila recently launched its most inspired and compelling marque to date, Gran Patron Burdeos. Debuting at around $500, Burdeos is made from a blend of anejos aged more than a year in American and French oak. The tequila is then transferred to ex-Bordeaux barrels and racked for a year or more in the cellars of Patron's hacienda in the highlands of Jalisco. Over that time the tequila develops a dark honey/amber hue and a bouquet of lightly spiced, floral and fruity aromas. It has a velvety, surprisingly light body, and a captivating palate of nutty, and wine-induced flavors. The finish is long and thoroughly satisfying.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Award-winning Milagro Select Barrel Reserve Anejo is triple-distilled exclusively from estate-grown agaves and aged no less than three-years in new French oak barrels. Made in the town of Tepatitlan in the highlands of Jalisco, this ultra-sophisticated extra anejo has a voluptuous body and a bouquet brimming with oaky, peppery and herbaceous aromas. The tequila quickly fills the mouth with the appetizing flavors of toffee, honey, and vanilla with delightfully spicy notes, all of which thankfully linger on the palate for an impressively long time.

Hacienda Los Camachines has extended its range of tequilas with the release of Gran Centenario Leyenda Extra, a highly seductive anejo aged for an average of four-years in French Limousin oak. To enhance the depth and complexity of Leyenda's blend, the maestro tequilero adds rare reserve anejos selected from the Hacienda's 150-year old cellars. The result is a world-class extra anejo with a dark amber color, aromas of vanilla, clove and oak, and a long, flavorful finish.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Also worthy of grand cru status is Casa Noble Anejo Limited Reserve. Made in the town of Tequila at the La Cofradia Distillery, this regal anejo is triple-distilled in alembic stills and matured for five years in French white oak barrels. Produced in limited quantities, the anejo has a silky texture, delectably spicy palate, and a sweet, slightly smoky finish.

Ultra-Purity, Ultra-Premium

Partida is one of the fastest-growing brands ultra premium tequila in the country and Partida Elegante is certainly helping to spur interest in the high end. One of the first tequilas to bear the extra anejo designation on its label, Elegante is handmade under the direct supervision of maestro tequilero Enrique Partida at the family's estate outside of Amatitan, Mexico. The savory tequila is distilled entirely from estate-grown agaves, and matured in American oak barrels for 36 to 40 months. It has a radiant golden hue, captivating layers of dry spicy flavors, and a long memorable finish. Partida Elegante is too marvelous to share with the in-laws.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Another brand on the charts with a bullet is 4 Copas, a masterfully crafted range of 100% agave tequilas. Made at La Quemada Distillery in the lowlands of Jalisco, recently released 4 Copas Extra Anejo is distilled using certified organic agaves, and matured for a minimum of 54 months in American white oak. It is redolent with the aromas of vanilla, honey and ripe red fruit, and has a leisurely finish loaded with dry, spicy flavors. The thoroughly enjoyable anejo retails for under $200, which makes tit an affordable slice of heaven.

Created in 1996 by ex-Van Halen rocker Sammy Hagar, super-premium Cabo Wabo 100% agave tequilas have generated considerable excitement in their brief, yet illustrious careers. Fans of the brand will delight in Cabo Uno Anejo Reserva, an extra anejo aged 38-months in both French and American oak barrels. Limited in production to only 1,800 cases a year, the tequila has an herbal and spice bouquet, a dry full palate, and a slightly smoky finish.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Ultra-premium El Diamante del Cielo Anejo is triple-distilled in state of the art pot stills from estate-grown agaves, and aged up to four years in oak. The limited production tequila is a handcrafted treat possessing a brilliant array of spicy, semi-sweet aromas, and has an expansive palate loaded with the flavors of caramel, black pepper and succulent fruit. The warm finish is long and flavorful.

Sipping any one of these spectacular anejos reinforces why so many people are enamored with tequila. We should all have futures as bright.

Sizzling New Blancos

The surest way to assess the attributes of a tequila brand is to sample a distiller's blanco, or plata version. Barrel aging has a profound affect on tequila. Over time, wood imparts tannins that soften and mellow the spirit. Blanco tequilas though are unadulterated, and typically bottled fresh from the still. When well crafted they're vibrant, bursting with flavor, and best represent the compelling qualities of tequila.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

So in case you've missed the initial fanfare over their release, here is our take on new silvers destined to make an impact.

Artisanal Jose Cuervo Platino 100% Agave Tequila is a genuinely charming spirit with tremendous depth of character. Platino grabs your attention at once with a medley of citrus, fruity, and lightly peppered aromas. It has a curvaceous body and layered palate of ripe plums, figs, toasted oak, black pepper and spice. The warm, lingering finish seals the deal.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Those who find themselves with a palpable thirst should invest in a bottle of Grin Patron Platinum 100% Agave Tequila. To produce a lighter-bodied spirit, the tequila is run through the alembic still a third time. In addition, a portion of each batch is aged briefly in American oak barrels and then blended back. Grin Patron Platinum has a satiny medium-weight body, aromas of citrus and black pepper, and a finish best described as luxurious and eminently satisfying.

By far the most innovative and interesting brand making its American debut is ultra-premium p.i.n.k. 100% Agave Tequila. Hide at the famed La Cofradia Distillery, this superior blanco tequila is delectable in every respect. It has a marvelous mouth feel, wafting floral and spice bouquet, and an extended, flavorful finish. Perhaps the tequila's most singular feature is its natural infusion of flavorless caffeine and guarana. Stimulating and delicious is an unbeatable combination.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Also new to the American market is Luna Sueno Blanco, a superb, accessible, and light-bodied tequila with a reserved, yet delightful floral bouquet, and a palate featuring flavors of spice, honey and dried fruit. The warm finish is long and comforting. This superpremium newcomer will certainly receive an enthusiastic reception in the U.S.

The Class of 2008

As has been the case in years past, there continues to be a steady influx of new tequila brands into the market. After all, nothing breeds success like success. Several of the recent arrivals stand out as sure-fire prospects. High on the list is superpremium Tanteo Chocolate 100% Agave Tequila, one of three jalapeno-infused tequilas in the range, the others being Tanteo Tropical and Tanteo Jalapeno. Describing these handmade spirits as sensational would be selling them short.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

The jalapeno infusion imbues the Tanteo tequilas with a precise dose of peppery heat, a measure of sizzle that's impeccably balanced and amazingly delightful. The monster hit of the trio will likely be the Tanteo Chocolate Tequila. It's even dazzling alone in a glass. It has a pale Champagne hue, an irresistible cocoa and lightly peppered bouquet, and a velvety textured body. The palate is a lavish affair of creamy milk chocolate laced with jalapeno. Top-notch all the way.

Another lottery draft selection in 2008 is La Certeza 100% Agave Tequila. The range of small batch spirits are crafted at the state-of-the-art Tierra de Agaves distillery, which was founded in 2002 by Francisco Beckmann, former co-owner of Jose Cuervo. The ultra-premium tequilas are distilled entirely from agaves grown on the Beckmann Gonzalez 3,500 acre estate, land that has been in their family since 1758. La Certeza Tequilas are brimming with authentic character and pedigree, reflecting the inherited skill of the family's seven generations of maestro tequileros. Aged in both American white oak and French Limousin barrels, La Certeza Anejo is generously aromatic, and loaded with engaging semi-sweet flavors ($60 for a 750 ml).

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Tierra de Agaves has also introduced Lunazul 100% Agave Tequilas, a superpremium line of estate-grown, small-batch spirits offered in both blanco and reposado bottlings. The Lunazul Blanco has a wafting bouquet, and a long lasting citrusy, peppery and herbaceous finish. Aging in American oak imbues the Lunazul Reposado with the layers of semi-sweet vanilla, fruit and spice. These tequilas are priced well below what their quality might normally dictate ($20-$22).

Sauza extended the successful Hornitos franchise with the late-2007 release of Sauza Hornitos Anejo 100% Agave Tequila. Aged in American white oak barrels, the amber hued tequila has a decidedly spicier and more herbaceous character than famed Hornitos Reposado. The bouquet is pleasantly fruity and floral, while the palate exudes the semi-sweet flavors of vanilla and cocoa with slightly smoky notes.
