Fed; RMITcriticised for cancelling west Papuan conference
Melbourne's RMIT University has cancelled a conference on West Papua in what has beendescribed as a cave-in to Indonesian pressure.
RMIT has defended its decision to withdraw official support for the conference on WestPapuan independence scheduled for later this month.
Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor NEIL FURLONG, says RMIT encourages debate but not whereit challenges another country's sovereignty.
Prof FURLONG says the conference was also cancelled out of consideration for the university'sIndonesian students.
RMIT expects to enrol almost 1,500 Indonesian students this year.
Greens Senator BOB BROWN says the RMIT's vice chancellor has told him Indonesian authoritieshave threatened to break off ties with RMIT if the event goes ahead.
